Moving Thoughts #02 — Why I Start With Intention
I teach with intention because I’ve always said I wanted to become the teacher I never had.
That’s not to say I didn’t experience pieces of that growing up—but if I’m being honest, there were far fewer people who truly saw and supported me in the way I needed. And it was during that time that I made a decision: I will be the teacher I wish I had when I was younger.
A teacher who leads with care and intention. Someone who understands that even though we’re here for dance, your well-being matters just as much—if not more. I want my students to know they can tell me when they’re not okay. I want them to feel comfortable, supported, and safe in the space we share.
I also understand that not everyone is quick to open up—and that’s okay. But when you create an environment where students feel safe enough to simply be, especially in something as vulnerable as dance, it’s powerful. You start to see what happens when people feel seen.
And then comes dance.
I know that might sound controversial. Some might say, “You’re here to teach dance.” And they’re right. But to me, their mental health and their relationship with dance matter more than striving for perfection—which, honestly, doesn’t even exist. Nor do I want them to believe it does.
I’d really love to hear your thoughts on this. Let’s keep this a safe space for open and respectful conversation.
