Moving Thoughts #5 The Older I Get, the More I Understand Protecting My Energy
Protecting my energy has honestly become one of the most important things in my life.
When I was younger, I was very much in my “say exactly what’s on my mind” era. I spoke openly and passionately, often without thinking too much about the bigger picture or how exhausting that could become over time.
Then came my “yes” phase — saying yes to everything, overcommitting myself, constantly being available, and believing I had to work nonstop to prove myself.
I truly thought productivity meant never slowing down. Take every opportunity, stay busy, keep pushing, and always do more.
And while I’m grateful for the work ethic and experiences that mindset gave me, I’ve also learned that living that way long term can lead to burnout very quickly.
These days, I approach things differently.
If I say no now, it’s usually because I genuinely need rest, need balance, or simply know I can’t give something the energy it deserves. I’ve learned that protecting my peace doesn’t require a lengthy explanation every time.
Ironically, if I’m taking the time to share my thoughts or opinions now, it’s usually because I truly care. And if I choose silence, it’s often because I’ve realized not every situation needs my energy.
One thing I’ve learned is that protecting yourself is something only you can truly do. The right people and healthy environments absolutely help, but learning to listen to yourself and your limits is just as important.
I’m no longer in the era of glorifying exhaustion.
These days, having work I enjoy, a roof over my head, the ability to pay my bills, and still make time for life outside of work feels like success to me.
Choosing calm over chaos has changed me in the best way. 💛
